Great site guys! Just a word of advice.. the edits seem a bit too “MTV” cut heavy. Keep up the great work and yes, cell drivers are bad, but texting drivers are the worst!
Just to put it out there, because I’m sure there will be more comments like it, anyone who says driving while on the cell phone isn’t dangerous or doesn’t affect them should die in a hole. Cell phones are one of the deadliest devices every created, only because of their use with cars. Just a few statistics for you: 50% of all crashes are because of cell phones. 20% of those crashes are FATAL. About 177,154,861 people use their cell phones while driving. That’s 73% of the total driving population in America. That gives you a really good shot of being in an accident due to a cell phone. Which in turn gives you a 20% chance of being DEAD. There are countless studies that prove this. PUT DOWN THE CELL PHONES. Jack is 100% correct about this.
By the way this is from a 16-year-old driver who DOES NOT OWN A CELL PHONE, because guess what YOU DON’T NEED THEM. HANG UP, SAVE A LIFE.
Love the rant, Jack! The whole texting-while-driving thing has got to be the stupidest idea ever. Mythbusters tested the talking-while-driving, and found that’s it’s about equal to driving drunk.
90% of random statistics are made up by people needing to prove a point. The percentage of car accidents caused by cell phones is closer to 6% and 10% of those are from people avoiding them being thrown from Geek Squad vans. Not from people talking on them.
All my statistics are from reliable sources. Mostly from: The Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, The University of Utah Studies, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Although I guess if 90% of statistics are made up then yours are probably fake.
Jack, U rock! Yeassss!! Man, doze schmucks who rap on their phones while… well, doing anything! Drives me up a frickin’ wall. What did we do before cell phones?? Well, shoot, y’all, we actually talked to one another! Or at least paid attention to what we were doing!
Great rant! I remember this one from the podcast. You would think moving a 2000lbs car at 60 miles an hour people would, oh I don’t know , involve my brain. I dont care if its hands free you are still distracted.
Jack you are right on the money, I mean I rather drive behind someone who is drunk then someone on the cell phone, the drunk dude is at least trying to drive ! No but really ,good job on the Rants .

No definitely DO keep that editing style, it makes the rants look better. They really work as a snappy 2 minute thing. Keept it up!
Btw the cell phone thing doesn’t even need to be debated, it’s a simple FACT that you should not be on it while driving. Only on 24 should people call and drive at the same time!
I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil - and you actually get fined for talking on the cellphone while driving down here. Jack’s rant is absolutely valid and anyone who says the contrary needs to review their concepts. It’s about respecting other people’s lives.
Rock on Jack.
@ Amish Steve and everyone else who cites nonsense statistics:
The accidents they say were “caused by” cell phones were just accidents in which the driver happened to be using a phone at the time. Since most people do talk on their phone in the car from time to time, it stands to reason that a large percentage of accidents involve people who happened to be using their phones. To suggest that these accidents were “caused by” the cell phones is a textbook example of the logical fallacy post hoc ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this).
You would have to have some sort of severe mental disability in order for your phone to affect your driving. When I talk on the phone in the car, my eyes are on the road (the same as if I weren’t using my phone), I have one hand on the wheel (the same as if I weren’t using my phone), I’m talking to my friends (the same as if I weren’t using my phone, and I had friends in the car), and I’m listening to something (the same as if I weren’t on the phone, and had the radio on). Please explain to me which part of that makes any difference in my driving ability.
This cell phone thing is one of those myths that gets repeated so much, people assume it’s true.
Perhaps we’ll have a rant next week about listening to the radio while you drive, or having passengers, since each of those things is just as likely to negatively impact a persons driving ability.
Great Rant, in Chicago it is illegal to talk on your cellphone without a earpiece, however you see police officers all the time talking on their phones in squad cars with no earpeice. You would think maybe it is an important call, but it isn’t because they receive all their emergency call through the radio. Double standard, a ticket can cost you big bucks.
@jrsights really dude? that has to be the most ridiculous comment yet. I sincerely hope that you don’t actually believe in what your typing.
Cellphone conversations and Texting is a HUGE issue. I work for a fairly large company in which I drive a company car. If we’re caught using our cellphones (even while using a bluetooth) we’re fired immediately.
Studies have proven (please hold your breath with your high and mighty “study shmudy…these folks have no proof talk”) That a person’s driving concentration is broken for an average of 10 minutes POST CALL, let alone the duration of the call itself.
Now, I’m guilty of using my cell phone while driving. I shouldn’t, but I do. I’ve noticed how it’s impaired my driving. Especially in high traffic areas.
Jack, I agree 100% even though I’m guilty as sin. At least I can admit that, unlike some of the responses here.
hey jrsights ,sorry but I had to comment on ur comment.I think cells are different in the fact that you may have an Emotional reaction/distraction conversation with the caller.Like a bossy wife,a Hoot’n Nanny girlfriend,a dumb cable rep. whatever. This is one of my Krackpot Theo’s and I’m sticking 2 it.
> How in the world does a cell phone break your concentration any more than listening to the radio or talking to your passengers?
Come on…listening to the radio, you’re not concentrating on having a conversation with someone. Most people (yes) talking on their phones in cars hold it in their hand, thus having one hand off the wheel.
Ok, so should we not be able to talk to our passengers? Isn’t that roughly the same as a phone conversation?
And as for having one hand off the wheel, most people I know drive with one hand most of the time anyway. Should it be illegal to drive a car with a manual transmission? How ’bout making it illegal to adjust the stereo or the air/heat controls? Where do we draw the line?
To jrsightes and others like him or her… The fact is… ANYTHING that can distract you while driving is DANGEROUS. Digging for that last french fry from you stop at McDonalds is even dangerous. Screeching into the front window to the Backstreet Boys is dangerous. Even smoking in your car can be dangerous. Dude… get a grip. Way too many people get into accidents from things like driving while paying more attention to that piece of plastic in their hands than merging into the lane next to them.
But making phone calls while driing is a good use of the time. That way, you’re not stuck on the phone when you get home. Driving + cell phoning = double duty = oh yeah!
Your Rant should be aired as a public information service.
I have a Blackberry, which basically, helps me to organize my life. The amazing thing about all mobile phones though, surprisingly, they save all of the messages and texts that you receive. You can even leave automated response to each individual who calls or texts you. With this in mind, I can’t believe that people actually text whilst driving. I didn’t realize that this went on. Knowing this will make me extra vigilant on the road. When I drive, my phone is on the dash and it alerts me if someone is trying to contact me. I find a safe place to park and then check if a client is contacting me.
I agree, Jack is 100% on the money here. Keep up the good work guys.
Just to add, over here in the UK, using mobile phones whilst driving incurs a hefty fine and maybe even being banned from driving for life if caught more than once.
Also, it is illegal to dial out, even if you are hands free. Hands free is legal if it is an inbound call though.
Here in the UK it’s illegal to talk on your mobile whilst driving and carrys with it a fine and points on your licence!! Plus it’s bloody annoying when the car in front is driving slow cos they can’t steer, signal, slow down, change gear with one hand cos the other is holding their phone….
Jack, perhaps the time and effort you put into thinking up this rant, editing it, and posting it online could have been better spent. Maybe you could write a letter to your local congressperson asking them to take a cue from NJ and making a “no cell phone use while driving law.”
They have that law in Calif. Nick and yet you still see so many people driving and talking on their cell phones. I think that they need to make the fine higher than what it is, so far it hasn’t stopped to many people from using their phones.
I think they also need to make it a law in the supermarkets, I for one am tired of being hit by someones cart because they are talking on the phone and thinking that they are the only ones in the store.
Kidding about that one of course, the law, not about getting hit.
nice rant jack, on a long trip tho with no good stations on the radio a call can really help break the boredom and wake u up. for drivers who have a freekin clue at least i dont think its that dangerous…bad thing is most drivers are just plain clueless. u hit the nail on the head man!
Man jack you need anger management classes. Why do you care so much about who people talk. One time I saw you on the phone while driving. Sounds like you have road rage. that causes accidents aswell. You need to chilax man. You sound like those grumpy old people that have way too much time on their hands that all you do is complain. Not funny at all.
Often when stopped first at a light, I count the people on cell phones as they drive by. There are always so many I really can’t imagine who they all need to be talking to while just driving down the road.
i think talking on a phone while driving may be a problem for you and most men, because men usually can only do one thing at a time. i have no problem talking while i’m driving. it’s the dialing that is the problem. and as far as making it illegal to talk on your phone while you drive - that is ridiculous. i am so sick of being told by the police what i can and can’t do. i have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, i have to wear a seat belt in the car, i can’t talk on my cell phone while i drive. can i eat while i drive? can i listen to the radio? can i talk to my daughter?
you know what is more distracting than talking on the phone in a car? having a 6 month old crying because she’s tied into a carseat in the back seat (because of course they can’t be in the front seat any more since the stupid airbags are there). why isn’t that illegal??? government is already intervening too much in my life. pretty soon i won’t be able to watch tv while i cook because i might burn the house down.
as far as who i talk to, i call my mom to see if she needs me to pick up anything for her. i call my sister to see whats up with her since she doesn’t live by me. this way when i get home to my six year old, i can spend more time with her, and i haven’t wasted an entire commute doing nothing. it’s not self important, it’s good time management.
anyway - i do love the rants, and i love the podcast.
Thanks for keeping it clean. I could tell that there were multiple times when you just wanted to let fly. I agree with you on all counts. I just moved out to Raleigh from California.
